stbethadettes: (pregnant and still explaining it all)

It's been a while since Elaine moved into the flat, and Beth's never seen it. She's never even been in the staff wing at all, in fact, and it's time that changed.

She's got a small bundle of pure white lilies -- from the bar rather than the greenhouse -- in one hand, and she raises the other to knock on Elaine and Ryan's door. She's pretty sure it's the right place, and if it's not, she can't imagine whoever answers won't tell the huge pregnant chick how to find it.

Elaine opens the door, beaming when she sees Beth. "Beth, come right in. And the lilies are lovely, let me put them in some water."

She ushers Beth into the flat, hugging her warmly. "How are you, Beth? Are you feeling well? You look wonderful."

The flat is done in a very comfortable modern style, and the sofa in front of the fireplace looks very inviting.

"Thank should have seen the places we looked at before. Quite strange, they were. I think one we had barely stepped into before we ran right back out again."

They had been interesting, to say the least. "Come and sit...would you like anything to drink? I've some lemonade newly made."

Strange drink, but Ryan and David both seem to like it.

Elaine gets the lemonade, two glasses, one for each of them, and goes to sit next to Beth on the sofa.

"How are you and Spike doing these days? Getting nervous about the birth? It can't be long now."

Elaine is actually insanely curious. This is a sensation she'll never have and she'd...just like to know what it's like, just once.

Elaine listens to Beth raptly. "That has to be a...really odd sensation. Two years," she repeats in fascination.

"Can you tell me...what it feels like? I mean...what does it feel like to have...a baby inside you?"

She blushes a bit. "I didn't ask you here to quiz you, but..."

Elaine smiles as Beth talks. "That has to be a wonderful feeling. The movement, I mean. But everything else seems as if it would be wonderful, too. Not so much the morning sickness, of course."

Elaine takes a deep breath. "I was jealous of you for that...for a little while." She blushes a little. "It seems silly to me now, but..."

She shrugs. "Now I'm just...I'm looking forward to meeting this little one almost as much as you are, I think."

Elaine beams. "I have been in birthrooms before. I know a little bit, though I am no midwife."

God gives gifts to whom He wants to have them. He must think Beth is very special, to make her a mother in a world where it would have been very difficult to do so.

"Is Hero staying to help you?"

Elaine laughs a little. "I'd be happy to help in any way I can. I daresay that you'll have enough on your plate without worrying about Spike or figuring out where things Hero will need are. I'm very honored to give you any help that you need."

Elaine considers childbirth an exceptionally sacred time and it's always an honor to be included when a new life comes into the world.

It's a time of special joy, and Elaine remembers very well the times she's helped in a birthing room.

This makes Elaine laugh some more. "Yes, I imagine he's going to be nervous but I think he might be really very good at this. Is he going to stay in the room with you?"

After all, in Elaine's time, the men were often off doing something else as far away as possible when childbirth came upon the women. This new notion of men being with their women when they gave birth is one Elaine likes, but finds strange all the same.

"He probably will. I don't think he's the type to sit down in the bar when he knows you're in labour. It doesn't seem like him."

It's a messy and long process, though. She wonders how Spike is going to handle that.

"Well, we had a bit of a scare when his daughter Chris went off to try and rescue a friend and got captured herself. But thankfully, another group went in and got them back--it was a difficult time, but at least everyone is safe now. Needless to say that he is much happier now, and we've started school for David."

Really, the past month had been bad all around. At least it showed signs now of getting better.

"I'm...not entirely sure. She's still a little fragile, I think. One of our number ended up dying was rather a mess. I'm just hoping that things will settle down now for a while."

Elaine's praying for that, actually.

"Yes. His name was Tony Almeida. He was a very good friend of mine. We hosted the memorial service, Ryan and I."

She sighs softly. "His wife hasn't been here yet since it happened. I hope she is doing...all right."

Because there's no way she'd be doing well.

There's a small lift of one corner of Elaine's mouth. "Thank you, Beth."

Elaine knows what it is like to lose someone--but Ryan had been gone a little over a month. She wonders if Tony will ever come back to the bar again, unsure whether that would be a good thing for Michelle or not.

The mood has grown too somber on this visit, however, and so Elaine decides on a subject change. Besides, it still hurts to talk about Tony.

"How is Hero lately? I'm afraid I have not been in the bar overmuch."

She laughs a little bit. "She thought I do you say it? 'Putting her on'? But then I showed her how the Bar worked, and I think she started to believe a little bit."

Elaine has not seen her since, but hopes to see her again soon. She liked Hero, she was an interesting person, and if she cared about Beth, it made her a good person as well.

Elaine smiles and stands up, offering Beth a hand to get off of the sofa--as has been stated, it's the comfy sort, which makes it extra hard to get out of it, of course.

"Yes, we'll have to get the two of you over here. And you must meet David the next time you are. Say hello to Hero the next time you see her."

"Call me if you need anything, Beth. Even if Spike is already on call."

Elaine laughs a little bit as she follows Beth to the door.
